Splintered gets Coronation Street spot

Splintered has been selected to feature in scenes from the nation’s favorite soap opera Coronation Street, it has been announced.

The latest feature to emerge from Greater Manchester’s own Not Number Productions, follows a troubled teen forced to confront her inner demons when rescued from the jaws of death by a mysterious, psychotic stranger. The film has already had a number of successful festival appearances and will now be seen in both Friday night episodes of the soap on March 26th.

Commenting, Splintered director Simeon Halligan said: “I’m really chuffed Splintered plays a key role in Friday’s episode of Coronation Street.  And of course, having worked at Granada TV for many years myself  - and actually on Corrie itself back in the nineties – it seems fitting the movie gets a nod here before its UK release in July!”

The film will be used as a backdrop for scenes involving teen characters Sian and Sophie, who’s friendship has been tested in a recent storyline following Sian’s decision to break a vow of chastity. It is expected this thread will lead to Sophie questioning her own sexuality – something Halligan noted was not without irony. “The background to the story in Splintered is very much about coming to terms with your own sexuality,” he explained. “This nicely echoes Corrie’s Sophie Webster as she begins to look at her own sexual identity.” Splintered is the movie Sian, Sophie, Ryan and Lee decide to watch when a DVD double date is set up at Ryan’s mums flat. However, the world of this psychological chiller only serves to heighten the awkward atmosphere that threatens to reach boiling point at any moment.

“It’s undoubtedly tough to compete in the UK film industry,” added Splintered producer Rachel Richardson Jones. “You have to make the most of every potential plug. So when the call came in from Coronation Street, I jumped at the chance to showcase our film.”

In addition to a number of up and coming projects that are in the works, Not a Number is also the group behind last year’s Grimm up North horror festival, which brought genre fans, stars and movie lovers from across the UK to Manchester for a weekend of Halloween fun. “Corrie knew about Grimmfest and asked if we might have a suitable movie to show clips from,” Richardson Jones continued. “They didn’t know we had just completed our own and its release was imminent. It seemed a perfect tie in for us and a great way to give people a little sneak peak.”
